Rainbow Fish

Melanotaenia spp.

Overview

Rainbow Fish are one of the most underrated community fish in the hobby. The males are absolutely stunning, displaying vibrant colors of blue, red, orange, and yellow that intensify as they mature. They are peaceful, hardy, and easy to care for, making them excellent for beginners. These are schooling fish that look best in groups of six or more. The more you keep, the better their colors develop and the more natural their behavior becomes. If you want colorful fish that are easy to keep and peaceful, Rainbow Fish are a fantastic choice.

Tank Setup

A 30-gallon tank is the minimum for a small school of Rainbow Fish, but 55 gallons is ideal for a larger group. They are active swimmers that appreciate open water, but they also need plants and décor for security. They do best in well-planted tanks that mimic their natural habitat. Use a substrate of sand or gravel and provide moderate lighting. A hang-on-back filter is sufficient, with a moderate flow that mimics their native rivers. Keep the tank covered, as some Rainbow Fish may jump when startled.

Water Parameters

Rainbow Fish are adaptable to a range of conditions. They do well in temperatures between 74-80°F. pH should be between 7.0 and 8.0, which covers most tap water. They are not particularly sensitive, but they do best in clean water. Weekly water changes of 20-25% will keep them healthy. They come from hardwater streams in Australia and New Guinea, so moderately hard to hard water is ideal.

Diet & Feeding

Rainbow Fish are omnivores that are not picky eaters. Quality flakes or small pellets should be their staple diet. They eagerly accept most foods, including flakes, pellets, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. To bring out their best colors, feed them foods high in color enhancers like spirulina. They also enjoy blanched vegetables like zucchini. Feed 2-3 times daily, only what they can consume in a few minutes.

Behavior & Temperament

Rainbow Fish are peaceful schooling fish that should be kept in groups of at least six. They are active swimmers and love to dart around the tank, especially when kept in larger groups. Males will display their best colors when competing for attention from females or establishing hierarchy. They are generally peaceful and get along with most community fish. They may occasionally chase each other, but this is normal schooling behavior and rarely results in actual aggression.

Compatible Tankmates

Rainbow Fish work well in community tanks with other peaceful fish. They can be kept with tetras, rasboras, corydoras, danios, and gouramis. They are safe with other rainbowfish. Avoid keeping them with large, aggressive fish like cichlids or oscars that might eat them. They are also not suitable for tanks with very small fish that could be seen as food.

Common Health Issues

Rainbow Fish are hardy and resistant to most diseases. The most common issues are ich (white spot disease) and fungal infections, usually triggered by poor water quality or stress. Maintain good water quality and quarantine new fish before adding them to the tank. They can also be prone to bacterial infections if water conditions deteriorate. Regular water changes and a balanced diet are the best prevention.

Breeding

Breeding Rainbow Fish is relatively straightforward. Males display their best colors during breeding season and will chase females around the tank. They are egg-scatterers and will lay eggs on plants or spawning mops. Remove the adults after spawning, as they may eat the eggs. The eggs hatch in 7-12 days, depending on temperature. Fry are small and need infusoria or liquid fry food initially, graduating to baby brine shrimp as they grow.
